No plans? No worries. Go holoholo (out for the fun). On Maui, you can take your days as they come, and plan your adventures spontaneously. The journey is the destination.
People say Maui no ka oi (Maui is the best) because Maui has it all. The gorgeous coastlines have some of the best waves to surf and serene habitats to snorkel. Relaxation becomes an art when you're watching a sublime sunset on a picture-perfect beach. What color sand do you like on your beach? Take your pick, because we’re all about variety -- from black to green to red. This island is yours to explore... the way you want to explore it.
Upcountry is the place to go holoholo. The only thing sweeter than the lavender and eucalyptus-scented air, is the eclectic boutiques and organic ranches.
Lahaina is more than just a cute beach town with a lot of t-shirt vendors. It’s full of great dining, shopping, and historical landmarks. The humpback whales love to swim by its shores in winter.
Wailea is where you find the most beautiful beaches in Hawaii. You’ll have a tough time deciding between going snorkeling, surfing, or just relaxing -- and an easy time doing them all.
If you ask for directions on Maui, the locals will answer in the amount of time that it takes to get there, and landmarks along the way.
Maui will literally blow you away. It can be very windy on the Island, especially in the afternoon.
Take a helicopter tour to be let in on Maui’s marvelous secrets, like hidden waterfalls. A 40-50 minute tour will give you the most bang for your buck.
From late November to early April, Maui gets a visit from its favorite winter tourists: humpback whales. Take a boat from Lahaina or Maalaea to see them up close. They're hard to miss.
I am absolutely APPALLED at the awful “customer service” we received here. I have traveled extensively throughout my lifetime and I have never once experienced such horrible customer service or anything even remotely close to as horrible as this. I would never stay here again or recommend anybody else to stay here. We are checking out early and staying somewhere else for the remainder of our trip because of this. If I could give zero stars I would. The front desk receptionist was so unbelievably rude and had such a horrible attitude that I couldn’t even believe it. I’m shocked that anybody would treat praying customers this way. I have NEVER been treated so horribly as a paying customer. We called the front t desk and wasn’t able to answer our questions and made no effort to do so. We tried calling back again for help and she was even more rude and unhelpful. She then CALLED US BACK and raised her voice at us on the phone and said if we kept calling the front desk then they would refuse to give us any information (they didn’t give us any helpful information to begin with) and then she HUNG UP THE PHONE ON US without even giving us a chance to speak. All we wanted to know was if there was an ice machine in the hotel or anywhere we could find cold water. She told us our only option was to order delivery. We later found some ice trays in our room and this all could have been avoided had she just told us to look for ice trays in one kitchen or simply told us in a polite manner that she wasn’t sure about the ice situation. Her attitude and rudeness were completely unwarranted. She made no effort to help answer our questions at any point. And the fact that she called us just to yell at us and then hang up was truly the cherry on top. I have never experienced anything like this in my life as a paying customer at a hotel.

We stayed here due to the price and it met our needs. Room truthfully had more than we needed in terms of amenities (full fridge, oven, range, microwave, dishwasher, laundry!) and although all the appliances were older and we really didn't spend enough time in the room to use them much, it's still cool that they were there. Along the same lines, this was the first hotel we stayed at that offered free DVD rentals (played on a PS3 which was less than intuitive but still a nice thought). The hotel in general needs a lot of updating in terms of finishes and appliances. There were 2 nice pool areas that again we didn't really use and the hotel is right on the beach(!) which was beautiful. It is walking distance or even easier driving distance to great snorkeling by the black rock formation. The coffee shop was closed due to COVID and restaurant was decent for breakfast (we didn't go for any other meals). They do not clean your room during your stay (not sure if this is a change due to COVID) but do offer fresh towels etc on request. If you want fancy/trendy/modern, this isn't it but if you're traveling on a budget and still want to stay in a great area with lots of amenities, try here!

We could not have asked for a better stay on Maui. This property is blessed with the best location on Kaanapali beach, and we got the ocean front aloha suite up on the 8th floor. So we got more like 220 degree ocean views! And got to see them whales playing around right from our bed!
Excellent pools and beach right in front. Best for staying with kids. And very close to Lahaina for shopping and dining as well.

Great experience,Clean room spectacular view. Our flight was moved back a few hours and they let us have a late checkout. Very professional staff. The restaurant was very clean and the food was excellent.

The staff had attitude and you could not swim in the beach. The beach was full of rocks so we drove to a beach whenever the kids wanted to have a beach day. The only positive was they had a nice pool. The also had nice fire pit areas but the minute after 8pm they would come and turn them off. The ocean front 1 bedroom suite was very nice.
Can’t wait to come back. Location and beach can’t be beat.

First trip to Maui and We think we found the best beach on Maui and possibly in the US. We’ve been to NC, CA, AL, FL, and MA and Kaanapali beach beats them all. Our 10th floor studio suite was perfect. The free use of washer and dryer was a great perk for sweaty clothes after hikes or runs. The staff was super friendly and helpful.
Excellent stay! Would absolutely stay again.

I would rate the hotel at a 95%. The rooms were great. Property was beautiful. The scenery between the 2 towers of the mountain was breathtaking. The staff was friendly.
My only 2 complaints were 1) I called to ask about beach chairs and the information provided was not helpful. I was told first come first serve (which was true), but they made it sound as if there were not a lot of chairs. Not one of the 7 days we were there were the beach chairs fully occupied. We did not need to purchase the chairs we did. Better information/communication on that would have been nice. 2) our safe locked up (batteries died) with all of our valuables in it. We were not leaving so it was not urgent, but we didn’t have a maintenance person out for almost 12 hours. Perhaps there was someone on call if it was urgent, but it was a bit concerning that if we were on our way out, that no one was available to help.
Neither of these things would stop us from staying there again. Just sharing the information as sometimes people do expect perfection and it’s better to be aware there may be hiccups.

We love Aston at The Whaler. It’s a beautiful property with well-maintained grounds. The landscaping and views are photo-worthy at every angle. Check-in was a breeze with the friendly staff that took the time to answer our questions. We stayed on a ground level 1br 2ba suite that was spacious with comfortable furnishings. The one exception to our otherwise perfect stay was the dated bathrooms in the suite. The sink faucet was loose, the wood trim and marble counters were damaged/cracked, and the toilet would keep running after flushing if we didn’t finesse the handle a specific way. 1st world problems, I know! :)
Still, love this resort. The intimate size and its location to the beach, the shopping/dining, and snorkeling at Black Rock make it perfect for us.

Asked for a room in the lower levels but was told they had nothing available. And the power going out but other than that everything else was excellent. Loved the complimentary washer/dryer and also the trash chute was so convenient for us. Thankfully even though the power went out the elevators were still working because we were all the way on the 12th floor. Thank you for taking good care of us!

Our fifth stay , and we will be back! Offers some of the best views in Maui and falling asleep to the sound of waves can’t be beat. The staff is great and always greet you with a welcome home. Some of the best beach in Maui right out your door.

Nightmare hotel with lousy rooms and blaring construction
ufathom
(Calgary, Alberta, Canada)
The place is a dated hotel, poorly managed and disorganized messaging around COVID rules.
The first unit we stayed in had heavy construction and piping work going on because of a roof leak. After the first night, they said that construction was only going to be for one night. Day 2-3 it was still happening and I was told there was nothing they could do about the noise.
I had to argue with font end staff to get moved to another room that wasn’t a downgraded unit. They eventually found another room with IKEA-quality furnishing, and a dishwasher would flood water after every load.
The very next morning in the new unit, the construction moved to directly above this changed room at 7:45am.
After a couple more days of enduring the noise, they finally moved us to a room in a different building after speaking with the manager. The manager was a really nice guy and wish the other people at the resort were as helpful. Unfortunately, the new unit had an amateur trombone player that decided to practice his scales daily throughout the rest of the stay.
The final straw for this 1-star rating was the exceedingly rude front desk woman during the evening shift. At initial checkin we were told that we could workout after hours and security would just let us in. It sounded great to workout after 10:00 PM and not have a bunch of potential COVID-carriers breathing on us during the pandemic.
Unfortunately, the night lady took it upon herself to lay down the law and say that after hours was not an option for us to work out. This obviously was because of the “rule book,” which she was kind enough to wave in our faces after making an exception on one of the nights. She said the new security guard wasn’t “comfortable” with “breaking the rules” and presumably he had something better to do. The resort is hardly in the middle of a seedy neighborhood. Who knows, maybe he had to police geckos or eating doughnuts. A big reason we picked this resort was because of the gym, so it’s super lame not to have access.
Definitely look at the other Maui options, this place wasn’t a great overall experience.

We were upgraded when we arrived and had a partial ocean view. Some things were not open because of Covid. This property is very clean and well maintained. The staff is very nice. The balconies area all connect so it wasn't private. The beach is beautiful here and its close to everything Kaanapali has to offer.

The appartments offer a lot of space; balconys are prettu private. 2 levels building space out throughout the property. a couple nice pools, and right on a beach with few people around. Yet walking distance or short drive to blackrock for cliff jumping and snorkling, and whalers village for restaurants and shopping. We stayed a couple nights at the beginning of our trip and decided to come back at the end of our trip.

This is a wonderful property and we have loved our time here! The location is perfect. The beach is really nice. We love to be able to walk to dinner or cook in our studio. The staff is friendly and responsive. Really the only downside is that unfortunately there has been a guy smoking cigars everyday, which gets into our condo and is impossible to clear out. Despite talking to this person ourselves and security speaking with him several times, it's still an issue. It is disappointing this property is not more assertive about the policy. To have a designated smoking area period is ridiculous in 2020, time for that to go!
We have stayed here many times. We rent from a private renter and always stay in the Lanai building, which is where their units are. We have the opportunity to relax on the 8th floor or the ground floor. No matter where you are in each of the buildings, you are literally 50 feet from the ocean in these all ocean facing units. Views are spectacular, amazing sunsets and watching the whales out front and turtles too.
We could not be happier when our time to visit comes twice a year. Alicia with maui beach condos is awesome to work with

Stayed in the one-bedroom premium oceanfront room. The pictures online are accurate, we arrived to dramatic and peaceful floor-to-ceiling ocean views! The room was clean and had everything we needed (stove is electric so it’s not for serious cooking but there are shared propane grills). WiFi worked well but was not secured for our room (416). Noise from other guests was not a problem. After sunrise we often saw whales in the distance from our terrace!
The beach in front is very rocky and not good for swimming, but you can walk to wider beaches to the south, or drive to Black Rock beach which is spacious and sandy, and perfect for snorkeling and swimming. I’m really glad we didn’t stay near Black Rock because it was crowded and chaotic down there. Beaches to the north in Kapolei were beautiful and secluded (a short drive).
Really feel like we got the best of both worlds staying here and I think we will be back!
I recommend renting a car, and getting water shoes for the rocky beaches in this area.
INCREDIBLE CONDO !!! Unit 315!!
reneegH6352QJ
My husband and I stayed in unit 315 with another couple. 1BR/2bath with Murphy pull down queen bed - nice new mattresses on both! This condo was well decorated, very clean and appointed. A fully equipped kitchen made meal prep easy! It also had the most AMAZING views of the ocean in any place I’ve ever vacationed before! The ocean waves slap against the sand seemingly right outside of the floor to ceiling windows! We saw whales breaching and sea turtles frolicking in the sand right from the lanai! You must stay here, in unit 315, at least once in your lifetime - you will not regret it! Mahalo!

Unhygienic, no cleaning

Extremely disappointing given that we had stayed here previously where everything went smoothly. We were traveling with two little ones, while working remotely during our ten day trip. Naturally we wanted the place to be clean, and it's not unreasonable to expect a couple of cleanings for a ten day stay? Especially when that's the normal policy. Well, we managed to schedule one cleaning and that went fine. We requested a second cleaning, and had it scheduled, but the place didn't get cleaned. What's more, when we complained, the person at the desk told us they don't do any cleanings, no apology.. As far as I see, there's no state mandated restriction on cleaning- this was communicated to my husband by the staff of a different residence managed by the same company. Mixed messages all around from the people at the front desk, some staff members informed me that occasional cleanings are done, just not on a daily basis. Others said they didn't do any cleaning at all. I don't blame the staff for this, I blame management's lack of a clearly communicated policy. However, a couple of the staff members we spoke to were very rude. Not cool at all! Finally, lest I forget, I found someone's lingerie in our bed, wedged between the mattress and the headboard while I fished around behind the pillows to find a pacifier my baby had dropped. Ew. Given their very lax policy on cleaning, I'm not one bit surprised. Doesn't inspire much faith in their 'extra' COVID precautions at all.

View from our 8th floor 1 BR unit was magnificent. The unit was spacious, recently recarpeted and well equipped. Front desk staff was friendly and helpful. Kitchen was adequately equipped but coffee maker needed filters not provided; otherwise fine and very workable
I can not say enough good things about our stay. They have 2 pools but only 1 was open due to Covid. When we arrived it was only open from 11-6:30 but shortly after it went to 9-9. the staff were incredible at making sure lounge chairs were sanitized between each person using them. they were right on it. In fact they have to be the hardest working resort staff I have ever seen. they work together like a great team. to get the pool area ready everyday. WiFi covers the entire grounds. I worked out everyday by the seawall. my kids did there school work in our room. We rented directly from the owner. The unit was incredible. If you needed something they had it. Spent a lot of time sitting on the Lanai watching the view. speaking of the view. multiple times we were fortunate enough to see a pod of dolphins going by. Jumping and frolicking about. a couple turtle as well. All in all. this is a great place to stay.

We had the most amazing time at Papakea! After reading a couple of the other negative reviews, I admit I was worried, but I rented directly from an owner rather than thru a third party, and I was not disappointed. The unit was really pretty - nicely updated, fully equipped, and with beautiful views just 50 feet from the water. I spent soooo many hours just sitting on the lanai watching the waves, and enjoyed an ocean lullaby that sang me to sleep every night. The first few days I was there, Hawaii was still requiring people wear masks outside even when they could socially distance, but once the state changed its policy, the resort did too. I completely understand why they had to follow the rules set by the state - but I was really happy once those rules were changed to make more sense! (I have to disagree with Culture 12330543661, who apparently hadn't read the Governor's proclamation that spelled out the state requirements about masking - up until mid-November, the rules were REALLY specific about masks being required in all condominium complex common areas, except when people were swimming or exercising strenuously. No exception for being distanced. Papakea was clearly following the state rules, and if she experienced something different, then I guess the other resorts weren't concerned about breaking the law.) I have to say that all the staff were really pleasant and helpful. I didn't use the pool, so I can't comment on what that experience was like; I do know that when I was there, the south pool was open 9:00 to 9:00 (the north pool was still closed, I guess because of the lack of guests?), but had just expanded the hours. My host was careful to be sure I understood all the rules and requirements when I booked - I really appreciated the care taken so that there were no surprises. I am sad that Culture's host or vacation rental company didn't take the care our host did! Anyway, my experience was so wonderful, I can't wait to go back.
Not exactly a vacation + false advertising. Felt like a prison with a lovely view.

We came from Oregon & rented a 4th-floor room. First of all, the website said the pool was open 9:00 - 10:00, in actuality, it was only open 11:30 - 6:30 which is the worst UV hours of the day and there is no shade. Also, they advertise two pools, which is false, only one is open. When asked why this change they claimed due to COVID, which is ridiculous because it just condenses the daily use instead of spreading it out over the hours and two pools, so more people during the limited hours and space. We walked down to several neighboring hotels and EVERY SINGLE one except Papakea had a full day at the pool open.
They also don't follow Hawaii State or Aston policies about COVID in the first place, but after visiting neighboring hotels, all the surrounding hotels DO. Papakea wants you wearing a mask on the outside grounds even if you are alone. An employee told a mother of a toddler to put a mask on the child. First of all, toddlers/babies shouldn't wear a mask, second, she was thirty feet away from any human! Plus she was walking ALONE, with her toddler. Papakea's policies are illogical & not even state or hotel guidelines, they are their own illogical, draconian, unscientific virtue-signaling that makes the place feel like a prison with a pretty view. The worst part is we were not informed of the prison cell policies until we got there. Oregon is a little far to turn around & go home. Also, there was a water fountain below us that was incredibly noisy. You'd think they'd turn it off during quiet hours, but no, it's on all night. When I asked an employee if they could please turn it off at night so we could sleep, they told me NO because of COVID. What? COVID is their excuse for everything that is miserable here, there is no way turning off a loud fountain at night is a COVID risk.
While our family was visiting other hotels along the same strip we saw people laughing, having fun, using the pool late at night, and felt so jealous. We made a hard choice and changed our flight to stay on 3 more days at another hotel so we could at least have a bit of a vacation. We stayed at Ka'anapali Beach Club, which was a very positive experience! They followed COVID rules, but the ones that can actually keep you safe, plus they had hand sanitizer everywhere, which is great! They were so friendly and people walking the grounds alone were not harassed for not having their mask up. Kids & babies were not harassed. Everyone was great about social distancing and super friendly. The pool was open and even its slide was open and running the full hours, which were even longer hours than the falsely advertised hours at the Papakea even if they had opened like the advertised! Plus, at the new hotel the only sound we heard at night was laughter and the ocean instead of a loud water machine.
The bottom line for us was our vacation at the Papakea felt very stressful, more like we survived it than enjoyed it, our second experience was beautiful and relaxing with the added benefit of feeling truly safer from COVID since the second hotel followed actual scientific rules and encouraged sanitation, social distancing instead of worthless authoritarian "virtue-signaling" which can not keep anyone safe from a virus. Glad we tagged on the extra three days so not a total waste of money, flight and vacation days
Do Not Book Through Costco
GingercookieS88
This Lahaina resort was lovely as the grounds were well kept and the pool was clean with many attractive areas for outdoor dinners, avail bbqs, evening strolls and the like. There is no restaurant and no beach but you can pull up your lounger on the spongy soft grass (if you are taking a break from sight-seeing!) and enjoy the *incredible* ocean view. There is much whale activity in February as it's mating season.
This Aston at Papakea is next to the ever popular "food truck" extravaganza. It also connects to the picturesque Boardwalk, there is a grocery store, bar, fast food takeout, souvenir store in the mini mall and a Slappy Jacks within short walking distance.
Spectacular beaches to the south and ones for snorkelling a short drive to the north (do your research on the safest times!) Minutes away from the amazing Honoapiilani Highway with a few fruit/banana bread stands if you need a break from the breathtaking views! PS do not irritate the locals on this HWY pull over if they're driving faster than you! The front desk staff at the resort is incredibly kind and towel service is swift (not free after 1 set with Costco.)
I will warn you not to book through Costco because they bought 5 of these units and do not maintain them. Many units are privately owned (lucky them!) The carpeting was disgusting, the walls were dirty, you wrestle sliding doors, the sink had a horrendous garbage smell emanating from it and the rusty fridge needed replacing. A little goes a long way had Costco just invested a little of their annual 21 billion income. Why not make guests feel they're sleeping in clean quarters? We were taken to another unit that was less desirable than the first. Thankfully being in Hawaii we were not room-fixated but for the upgrade COST for an oceanfront room I would have expected much better. 1 clean service 1 towel service for 2 weeks. Like I say, I'm sure the Resort has better care with direct customer reservations but Costco fails *for what they charge you.* Don't waste your money on Costco. Book your own accommodations.

Dear Management
Upon checking into the room we were told that they gave us a different room then requested. When we entered the room we found a dirty room with writing on the walls , air conditioner wasn’t working, broken fans , moldy shower floor, bedroom had no air and closet had dirty things inside. This room was in much need of cleaning and repairing. We could not stay in there due to these conditions. I contacted your office and told the person in there about these problems and they said they couldn’t do anything. I asked to speak to a manger and they said nobody was there. I told them I was checking out and they should refund my money due to not giving me a livable place to stay. They said they could not do that . I told them that I was checking out please refund my money. I then went to the front desk where they checked me out and refunded me their fee. They also never called me back or refunded my money.
We were three couples in three rooms with Garden View. One couple's room was very shabby, ours was okay and the third was good. The couple with the shabby room upgraded to Ocean View for only $40 / night (~$200 instead of $160). If you are not trying to save money, it is a great deal. The room and views of their new unit were much much better. However, this is a condo unit and each place is independent of any other. The management staff were very nice and took care of some minor problems but had no control over the state of the rooms. We don't know if the other ocean view rooms are as nice as the one our friends got. But overall, good value for money.
So not worth the money, Unit 412

I have been to Maui 15+ times and this is by far the worst place i have ever stayed. The only thing nice i can say is that it waa clean. The bed in the room was awful aa waa the sofa bed. The door to the bedeoom waa a sliding door and it didnt shut tight and waa banging against the wall all night long. I got a parking permit from the front desk which is run by Castle Resorts and they were beyond rude. Luckily our stay was only 2 nigjts, I couldn’t have handled not getting any sleep for more than that!
Beware Damages Scam

We had a pleasant 3 night stay in January and enjoyed our beachfront view. No issues while we were there. Unit was a bit worn in terms of maintenance but nothing that impacted our stay. We had some ants one day, but otherwise generally clean. Would have rated as 4 stars, except for experience after our stay. I had declined the "damage waiver fee" when we booked. It was my wife, myself, and our adult son. I thought likelihood of any damage from our 3 night stay was low and we had no incidents while we were there. When I reviewed my credit card statement I saw we were subsequently charged $68 dollars after our stay. We were never notified or advised of any damage, our card was just charged. When I called, the front desk person told me it was for damage to a coffee table. When I said we we had no incidents or noticed anything, I was advised the manager would call me back. No response. I called a second time and spoke with front desk person, again advised manager would follow up and no response. The apartment has a lot of deferred maintenance, again nothing that impacted our stay, but seems like this is a scam if you don't pay for the optional damage waiver you are going to pay for whatever random "damage" they will attribute to you. Either don't stay here or just bite the bullet and pay their "damage waiver fee" upfront.

It is hard to know where to begin. The facilities, the beauty, the service- all was just phenomenal! My family of four had ample space in a great accommodations that was as pleasant as pleasant can be. The pool is lovely (and heated) and the jacuzzi was nice and warm. The staff was great and very friendly. In addition, the resort provided bogey boards, umbrellas, and beach chairs for us to use as a bonus. Being up on Maui hill made for a nice view of the palm trees and the ocean. We were a short walk from the beach. This area has long expanses of beach and a great beach walking path. Our 2 bedroom was huge, pool perfect temp and large and the landscape kept up meticulously. We loved our stay.

We have stayed here multiple times and the resort is very well run and maintained. The units are large (we were in a 2 Br), and in this particular unit had a very nice water view. Spotlessly clean and easy checkin, albeit with extra Covid precautions and paperwork needed.
Love this place. Guys, you should know that each condo is privately owned and so if you read a review complaining of a bad bed, dingy carpet, etc, then maybe you got an older unit. We stayed at Q109 and. It was gorgeous, just recently remodeled with wonderful beds and super clean. (I downloaded pictures but they were right before we left and the beds are not made, etc)... VRBO has lots of individual listings so you can get exactly the condo you chose online.
Maui Banyan is super conveninent to all the restaurants and beaches, and has lots of parking. We love condos over pricy hotels because it is so much easier to go out and explore.. We loved Maui Banyan (especially Q109)!!

I‘ve been there for 4 nights. The appartement (507) was very open, well structured and had enough space. The balcony was a little bit too snall for me. The kitchen was very good equipped, so I was able to prepare any kind of food. It was really clean, but you could see, that the appartement has come into it‘s years. One point that really was uncomfortable - was that this building was a no smoking area. I had to walk really far to go to the smoking area. That was really bad!
Nice enough place to stay.

I was shocked to be paying $284 a night, but the Maui Banyan was nice enough. The room had new bathroom and tile. The TV was good as was the air conditioner and the beds were comfortable. We were given a room in a building with an elevator and 2 beds as requested, but it took a change of room before we accepted the room. It was a little too far for us to walk to most restaurants so we mostly drove. Nice room. Would stay again

Loved this place. One bedroom, 2 bathroom condo. Walking distance to anything we needed, great beach across the street. Most beautiful sunsets. The grounds are gorgeous. Parking space included. Got a diving trip arranged right in the office.
Let’s be clear: The water off Maui’s South Shore is so clear that you can see up to 150 feet depths. Add in the world’s friendliest sea turtles, spinner dolphins, plus hundreds of species of fish, and you’ve got the finest snorkeling in all of Hawaii.
Water-Sports
The North Shore of Maui is where it’s at for all kinds of surfing and SUP-ing (stand up paddleboarding). Wild waves and skilled instructors are easy to find, so get in the water and take up your favorite water sport.
Zip Lining
You can hang ten in the water, but you can hang 3600 on a zipline. There are many places to zipline across the island, including Maui’s longest zipline at 3,600 feet.
