Two Days on Kauaʻi's North Shore

On Kauaʻi’s North Shore, farm-to-table dining is a way of life, the towering emerald cliffs of the Nā Pali Coast are a sight to behold, and the ocean invites endless adventure. From fresh island flavors to pristine beaches and lush landscapes, beauty awaits at every turn. This 2-day itinerary offers a perfect taste, but you may find yourself wishing to stay much longer.

Day 1

  1. Coffee & Serene Views

    Start your morning with breakfast and coffee (we love Java Kai!), then take a scenic drive to the Hanalei Valley Lookout for sweeping views of taro fields and majestic mountains. Make a pitstop in Hanalei Town, where you can browse local shops and grab a few light bites.

  2. Relax at Hanalei Bay

    Spend midday at Hanalei Bay, postcard picturesque with its wide stretch of soft sand, where you can swim, paddleboard, or simply relax. Grab lunch in Hanalei, then head to Kīlauea Point for lighthouse views and coastal scenery. If time allows, hop in at Anini Beach for calm waters and easy snorkeling.

  3. Dinner & Sunset Views

    Enjoy a relaxed dinner in Princeville, with options ranging from casual bites to elevated island cuisine. Bonus: choose a restaurant near the water for sweeping ocean views as the sky lights up at sunset in true North Shore style.

Insider Tips

One-Lane Bridges: As you drive north, you’ll encounter historic one-lane bridges. Be sure to yield to oncoming traffic and wait for any cars already crossing to pass first.

Stay out of taro fields. As tempting as it may be to explore the beautiful taro (kalo) fields, they are private and culturally significant areas. Please respect local farmers and do not enter them.

Hanalei’s lush landscape comes with frequent rain, so bring a raincoat and stay flexible with your plans. Heavy downpours can cause sudden flooding and occasionally close Kūhiō Highway, so it’s best to monitor conditions and adjust as needed.

Stay updated on seasonal conditions. Summer (May-October) offers the calmest waters for swimming, snorkeling, and paddleboarding. In winter (November-April), the ocean is more active and best enjoyed from shore.

Day 2

  1. Fresh Eats & Snorkeling

    Start your day by grabbing fresh pressed juice and a quick breakfast to-go from Kauaʻi Juice Co. or a local café, then make the scenic drive to Hā‘ena State Park (reservations required). Spend time at Ke‘e Beach, where you’ll be treated to stunning views of the Nā Pali coastline.

  2. Hike Kalalau Trail

    Do an entry-level hike on the Kalalau Trail for a memorable way to experience the Nā Pali Coast. Even a short 1-2 mile hike offers breathtaking views of cliffs, lush valleys, and the ocean below, making it well worth it without going the full distance. Start at Hā‘ena State Park near Ke‘e Beach.

  3. Dinner & Live Music in Hanalei

    End your day with a casual dinner and drinks at Tahiti Nui in Hanalei, where live music adds to the laid-back charm of a perfect North Shore evening.

Hā‘ena State Park Access: All visitors must have a reservation or a valid Hawaiʻi State ID to enter Hā‘ena State Park. Entry includes access to Kēʻē Beach and the Kalalau Trail, allowing you to hike to Hanakāpīʻai Valley, Hanakāpīʻai Beach, and Hanakāpīʻai Falls. If you hike to Hanakāpīʻai Beach, note that swimming is not recommended due to strong rip currents, powerful shore break, and hazardous undertow. With no lifeguards, limited cell service, and a remote location, it’s best to enjoy this beach from shore only.

Gentle reminder for hiking: Bring plenty of water, wear reef-safe sunscreen, and protect yourself from the sun with a hat or light layers. Take your time and stay hydrated along the way.
